Grants and scholarships
At this time next year, what if you were eating fresh croissants in France, or skiing in Scandinavia? Youth for Understanding (YFU) now offers grants of up to $2,000 to qualified students who want to experience a semester or school year abroad.
Who are You?YFU looks for motivated and mature students who are eager to literally see the world from a different angle. An exchange year is a unique opportunity to develop an understanding, appreciation and respect for another country and culture. At the same time, it is a chance for you to get to know yourself away from home.
What do You Need?- A minimum 70 percent average
- A resident in Canada
- You must be over 14 years old, and cannot have completed high school at the time of departure.
- You have to pass YFU’s standard selection and interviewing process.
- You must travel on a full-year or semester program.
What do we Offer?- The chance to recieve grants of up to $2,000 (*student must pay remaining fees).
- Programs in 50 countries, including Chile, Switzerland, Japan, Denmark, France, Ecuador, Sweden, The
Netherlands, Finland and Germany (click

- No hidden fees. Program includes placement with a carefully chosen host family and school, all meals, comprehensive insurance, airfare and 24-hour support services from YFU’s staff and volunteers.
- Experience. YFU has sent more than 240,000 students worldwide for more than 50 years. That’s also why more than 10,000 parents across the globe trust the organization with their teenagers each year.
What do You Need to Apply?You need to first be accepted to a YFU exchange program in order to apply. Once you have been interviewed, admitted and regsitered, you should submit a one-page letter of motivation along with your registration package.
There is no seperate form. Please remember to include the letter in order to be considered for a grant.The letter should include:
• Why you want to become an exchange student.
• Your method of choosing your destination country.
• How you will help spread awareness about student exchanges and share your experiences with your Canadian classmates during your exchange; an example would be “regular reports to be printed in the school newspaper.
This is an opportunity for you to begin the adventure of a lifetime, but it is also a way for the YFU community to give back to the many schools who have helped us welcome students in Canada.
