Thailand
Thailand is an intoxicating blend of the old and the new: ride an elephant through the forest, float down the Chao Phraya River that runs through Bangkok, meditate in one of the country’s many golden temples. All of these traditional activities are as possible as visiting a modern mall in fast-paced Bangkok!
Located in the heart of Southeast Asia, Thailand is a constitutional monarchy ruled by a king and an elected Parliament. Three-fourths of its 63 million people are ethnic Thais; the rest are of Chinese, Malay, or tribal origin. Most Thais are Buddhists, but other religions are also practiced and religious freedom is guaranteed by the Thai constitution.
Thailand’s beaches are world-renowned, as is the gentleness of its people. Thai culture is heavily influenced by its neighbors, China and India. Local food is very alluring, especially in the floating markets, where you can buy tropical fruits you’ve probably never seen before. Try a custard apple, a plum mango, or a jujube. Boat vendors also sell a rich variety of brightly colored herbs and vegetables.
Teaching in Thai schools follows traditional Asian methodology - stressing rote learning (learning through memorization) and respect for authority. Students usually wear uniforms to school and are expected to help clean classrooms, just as they are often expected to help with chores at home. Scouting is part of the school curriculum and is government-supported. King Rama VI, who was educated in England, first introduced scouting to Thailand in 1911. Experiencing Thailand firsthand will open your eyes to the multiculturalism of Southeast Asia and to a way of life that is as connected to the modern world as it is rooted in tradition.
